Around demonstrators in the coastal town of Budva hurled stones, bottles and flares at police who were keeping them apart from some 40 marchers wearing shirts in the colors of the rainbow, the symbol of the gay rights movement. At least 10 anti-gay demonstrators were arrested and several marchers were slightly injured, police said. Opponents of the parade had posted fake notices announcing the death of Cimbaljevic on public buildings in Budva.

Pride parades are famous for bright colors, daring outfits, and for uplifting the LGBTQ community and glitter — lots and lots of glitter. The parade in itself is an acknowledgement of the struggles faced throughout history by members of the community, and the issues they continue to face. Marriage equality was afforded only two years ago, and discrimination persists, but these parades exemplify the ability to overcoming struggle and heartache, and choosing to strive toward living as boldly as the colors on the rainbow flag.
What a strange, embarrassing thing: To live in one of the gayest cities in America, and yet find that this very gay city is incapable of putting on a smoothly run, successful gay-pride celebration each year. In other cities, gay-pride celebrations are huge, well-run, profitable events. In the Seattle area, there is no shortage of people, gay and straight, eager to watch the local gay community put its best, worst, and most flamboyant members on display.
When asked about the history of pride, often the first thing that comes to people's minds are the Stonewall Riots. Canada, however, has it's own rich history and turning points in the struggle for and eventual celebration of LGBT rights. The most well known of these are the Toronto raids which lead to riots that turned into what is today, a vibrant pride festival.
The celebrations start one weekend before the official Pride date. Get your boarding pass ready! Pick your favorite color and go in drag!
